A Conversation on Nano Technology and Epoxy Floor Coatings

Let’s get acquainted with a relatively new term, “nano.” What does it mean? What is meant by “nanotechnology” and “nanotechnology epoxy floor coatings”?

Nano particles are smaller particles than are traditionally used in coatings. Normally, particles that are used in coatings are in the micron size, and nano particles are less than 0.1 micron.

To visualize, eight nano particles placed side by side would be less than the width of a human hair. So, nanotechnology is very small but these particles can have a big effect on coatings, especially epoxy coatings.

Depending on what nano particle you use in the coating, you can improve the coating properties that you desire. For example, nano particles can be used in coatings that reinforce and therefore used to improve strength.

Traditional additives to coatings may cause the coating to become opaque, or even white or brown, depending on the additive and the quality you’re using.

Now, if you take nano particles of specific ingredients, because of their very small particle size, when you include them in a coating you can achieve properties such as clarity without the nano particle affecting the color or appearance of the coating.

Nano particles, because of their very small shape, have an effect on the film performance at the surface and can improve the strength of the coating but at the same time allow the coating to be clear. Also, since the particles are finer, other properties may be improved such as abrasion resistance, impact resistance and flow characteristics in an epoxy coating.

The big improvement would be in abrasion resistance, and hardness also. It will improve the hardness of epoxies and limit the amount of scratching that occurs, especially in the early days of the coating, and also for longer term durability.

If a customer is using it on a warehouse floor, the coating will last longer and look better with the use of nanotechnology.

The use of the nanotechnology with a proper formulation of the coating itself allows one not to use any solvent in the coating. So it’s VOC free, which makes it, by definition, a green technology. And there is no evaporation because there is no solvent in the coating. You get a true film thickness of let’s say 16 mils at 100 sq. ft. per gallon.

Floor coatings make claim for antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. How does the nano epoxy technology epoxy flooring product differ from standard issue epoxy coatings in this regard?

Well, one can incorporate specific nano particles into the epoxy coatings and not have to use other fungicides or bactericides in the coatings. Tests are being conducted on materials that have been proven to be safe by the FDA and that allow you to have the anti fungal and microbial properties formulated into the epoxy coating.

Is there a more or less labor cost for applying nano floor coating compared to standard epoxy coating?

It appears in our formulation work with nanotechnology that equivalent types of formulations with or without nano at Zero VOC, that the nano dispersion containing epoxy coatings flow better and therefore apply better with a squeegee on the floor, so it is a little easier to apply.

I think the single most useful benefit of using nano technology is abrasion resistance. It greatly improves abrasion resistance versus standard epoxy coatings. So far, in early development, there are nano dispersions that act as natural fungicides.

These remarkable nano particles offer the promise of vast improvement compared to present day use of hazardous chemicals to do the same thing.

You are going to increase your abrasion resistance, and keep the same gloss. Every other additive that has been used traditionally to improve abrasion resistance, you lose gloss. That’s really the point. The gloss matches the standard epoxy with nothing in it. This is a tremendous advancement.
